The most obvious question is what for such an almost abstract stuff is. For generations to come, cause-and-effect thinking is becoming more and more alien, and they would like to associate abstraction with a decent image and emotional intelligence. We know the complaints of the intellectuals of the old date, who are surprised to notice that no one knows (moreover, not only on the Internet) to distinguish between irony and sarcasm from profound statements. I also complain about this, although I increasingly am to conclude that it is high time to learn to translate traditional thinking into modernity.
Well, a somewhat abstract distinction between passive and active tasting, as well as all the resulting consequences, manifest themselves in a genuine, material, tangible way in everyday life. One can pour everything into a glass bottle, and only through trust, and therefore social contract, we believe that what they wrote on the label is accurate. Our properly prepared activity can check this truth, find tempranillo where it should be. Still, in most cases, we believe the word and prefer to attribute blind matter to objective assessments, accustomed to the fact that the wiser knows better.
Robert Parker Jr based his career on this. Today, however, I walk around in a nearby supermarket, noticing around only one type of plonk. I remind the self-satisfaction of a Polish industrialist spilling all the beakers of the world and offering the resulting liquid as wine. That’s why I see the need to split hairs abstractly, to preserve my brain ability, and to avoid believing that all in a bottle could be wine, to escape industrial substitutes for consumer’s happiness and misfortune.
Writing about wine and looking at it through the prism of an American winey genius, I would like to force smartphone people to exercise some cells tired with images and icons and move them from thumbs to brains. The choice of wine is, in fact, a choice of aspiration, and therefore culture. It is, also, thinking in the style in which the whole wonderful world has believed to so far. Splitting hairs, however, I force myself to discipline, because teachers often spoil good pedagogy with the mess in their heads. The activity must be clear and precise.
